AFC East Notes: Bell, Bills, Cannon, Dolphins

At last, a piece of good news for the Jets. It appears Le’Veon Bell‘s MRI came back clean, with ESPN.com’s Jeremy Fowler tweeting the exam showed no tears or notable damage in Bell’s injured shoulder. Bell played every Jets offensive snap Sunday, and Jets doctors felt the veteran running back would need more than just a couple days’ rest to surmount this shoulder setback. But this MRI looks to be a good sign for his availability Monday night against the Browns. Should Bell play, he will be taking handoffs from Trevor Siemian. Sam Darnold is out with mono.

Let’s look at the latest from the other AFC East teams:

  • Marcus Cannon left Sunday night’s Patriots win because of a shoulder injury and may miss time. New England’s starting right tackle underwent tests this week, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, who adds this injury is not believed to be a long-term setback. Cannon is practicing on a limited basis. Guard Joe Thuney moved to right tackle against the Steelers, but Reiss adds swing tackle Korey Cunningham may draw that assignment against the Dolphins (Twitter links). Cunningham was inactive in Week 1. The Pats just signed Marshall Newhouse as well, pointing to a possible Cannon absence in Miami.
  • Teams have been monitoring the Dolphins‘ situation regarding trades, and Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports notes GMs have been calling Chris Grier about potential deals. The Dolphins have traded Laremy Tunsil, Kenny Stills, Ryan Tannehill and Robert Quinn this year. However, there is not much left in terms of trade assets on the roster, at least among players the Dolphins would be willing to deal.
  • Bills linebacker Tyrel Dodson drew a six-game suspension Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Dodson, a rookie UDFA who has resided on the commissioner’s exempt list, was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge in May.

Bills Reach 53-Man Max

The Bills dropped a host of players on Saturday to reach the 53-man limit, but they also carved out spots by other means. Fifth-round linebacker Vosean Joseph (shoulder) and running back Senorise Perry (quad) were placed on IR while undrafted linebacker Tyrell Dodson was placed on the Commissioner’s exempt list.

Bills Rookie LB Tyrel Dodson Arrested

Tyrel Dodson‘s NFL career hasn’t gotten off to the hottest start. ESPN’s Mike Rodak tweets that the undrafted Bills linebacker was arrested last weekend on charges of disorderly conduct, assault/domestic violence and damage to property. The news was first reported by TMZ Sports.

“We are aware of the incident involving Tyrel Dodson last weekend,” the Bills said in a statement (via Rodak). “We have been looking further into the matter and will continue to gather information as the legal process continues.”

Dodson’s pretrial conference is scheduled for June 18th. Dodson has continued to participate in Bills OTAs this week, so the team is apparently willing to let the court process unfold before they make any decisions. Dodson could also be subject to discipline from the NFL.

The Texas A&M product had another standout campaign in 2018, compiling 70 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, and one interception. He had a team-high 105 tackles in 2017. Despite his collegiate production, Dodson still went undrafted during this past year’s draft.

As it always is with undrafted free agents, it was already an uphill battle for Dodson to make the 53-man roster. It doesn’t help that Buffalo drafted a linebacker (fifth-rounder Vosean Joseph) and added another undrafted linebacker (Juwan Foggie).

Bills Sign Cody Ford, Five Other Draft Picks, Eight UDFAs

After signing first-round pick Ed Oliver earlier today, the Bills have signed six more draft picks and eight undrafted free agents.

Draft Picks

Ford, whom many teams had earmarked as a Day 1 selection, will give the Bills options along their revamped offensive line. He’s capable of playing either guard or tackle, so Buffalo can deploy the Oklahoma product in any number of ways. Singletary, meanwhile, becomes yet another new running back on the Bills’ roster, joining T.J. Yeldon and Frank Gore. LeSean McCoy, therefore, could potentially either become trade bait or be released.

UDFAs

Jackson was widely expected to be drafted, but he was instead able to choose his destination and remain close to home. He received $75K guaranteed on his deal with the Bills, tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.
