Extra Points: Cowboys, Benwikere, Vikings
A quick look around the NFL:
- New Cowboys cornerback Bene Benwikere needs to be on the team’s 46-man gameday roster four times in order for the Bengals to receive Dallas’ sixth-round pick in 2019, ESPN.com’s Todd Archer tweets. The corner was shipped to his fifth team in eleven months in the Sunday trade.
- The Vikings gave quarterback Kyle Sloter an above-average salary of $20K/week to join the practice squad, allowing them to outbid the Broncos, Redskins, Eagles, Falcons, and others, Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press tweets. Sloter excelled in the preseason, but the Broncos went in a different direction to solidify their quarterback void.
- The Jets auditioned tight end Tim Wright, as Howard Balzer of BalzerFootball.com tweets. Wright, who is now years removed from playing his best football, was recently cut loose by Detroit.
Mutual Interest Between Patriots, Boldin
Anquan Boldin retired from football this summer and he swears that he is retired for good. However, there was mutual interest between the wide receiver and the Patriots in the wake of Julian Edelman‘s injury, Ben Volin of The Boston Globe hears.
It doesn’t sound like there’s anything brewing between the two sides at the moment, particularly since the Bills continue to hold his rights after placing him on the reserve/retired list. It’s hard to see a scenario in which the Bills cut Boldin loose to sign with a divisional rival, particularly since his retirement left them high and dry after trading Sammy Watkins to Los Angeles.
Boldin turns 37 in October, but he showed last year that he can still be productive. Boldin joining up with the Patriots seems unlikely, but his itch to play is worth keeping in mind as the season goes on.

Packers To Work Out DL Quinton Dial
The Packers will work out free agent defensive lineman Quinton Dial on Monday, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. Dial was cut by the 49ers on Saturday..
Dial had been a consistent presence on San Francisco’s defensive line over the past few seasons, starting 26 games between 2015 and 2016. Following a 2015 campaign when he established career-highs in tackles (59) and sacks (2.5), Dial seemingly took a step back in 2016, finishing with 36 tackles and no sacks. The 27-year-old had signed a three-year extension with the 49ers prior to last season.
Green Bay projects to be a bit thin along the defensive line, as Letroy Guion has been released and rookie Montravius Adams will likely miss time to begin the year. Dial, if signed, would join Packers options such as Kenny Clark, Mike Daniels, and Christian Ringo.
Bills Worked Out QB Joe Webb
The Bills worked out quarterback/special teams ace Joe Webb, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Webb was released by the Panthers on Saturday.
Buffalo currently employs former Carolina executive Brandon Beane as its general manager, so he has some level of familiarity with Webb. While the Bills have three quarterbacks on their roster, two — Tyrod Taylor and T.J. Yates –are dealing with concussions, leaving rookie Nathan Peterman as their only healthy signal-caller.
Last season, Webb appeared in all 16 games for the Panthers while playing mostly on special teams. The 30-year-old also managed one reception and returned six kicks.
