Updated 2022 NFL Draft Order
The NFL’s first ever 17-game regular season is now over, and the 14-team playoff field is set. The end of the year also confirms, of course, the draft order for the top 18 picks, allowing the non-playoff clubs to begin planning for the offseason.
Despite their upset win on Sunday, the Jaguars will have the top selection for the second year in a row; this marks the fifth time a team has had back-to-back No. 1 picks, and the first since the Browns did in 2017-18.
For non-playoff teams, the draft order is determined by the inverted 2021 standings, plus a series of tiebreakers, starting with strength of schedule. For playoff teams, the order is determined by their postseason outcome and regular season record.
Here is the final draft order (for non-playoff teams) along with the current projected order for the 14 postseason clubs:
- Jacksonville Jaguars: 3-14
- Detroit Lions: 3-13-1
- Houston Texans: 4-13
- New York Jets: 4-13
- New York Giants: 4-13
- Carolina Panthers: 5-12
- New York Giants(via Bears)
- Atlanta Falcons: 7-10
- Denver Broncos: 7-10
- New York Jets (via Seahawks)
- Washington Football Team: 7-10
- Minnesota Vikings: 8-9
- Cleveland Browns: 8-9
- Baltimore Ravens: 8-9
- Philadelphia Eagles (via Dolphins)
- Philadelphia Eagles (via Colts)
- Los Angeles Chargers: 9-8
- New Orleans Saints: 9-8
- Philadelphia Eagles: 9-8*
- Pittsburgh Steelers: 9-7-1*
- New England Patriots: 10-7*
- Miami Dolphins (via 49ers)*
- Las Vegas Raiders: 10-7*
- Arizona Cardinals: 11-6*

Cardinals Designate J.J. Watt For Return
The Cardinals have designated J.J. Watt for return from the injured reserve list, per a club announcement. With that, Watt can begin practicing with the team as soon as today and rejoin the 53-man roster at any time over the next three weeks.
Watt may or may not be trotted out in Week 18 against the Seahawks, a game that could decide the NFC West. But, beyond that, it appears that Watt could suit up for the playoffs. That’s phenomenal news, especially since doctors told him that his surgically-repaired shoulder would keep him sidelined all year long.
“They tell me I’m done, I have to get surgery and it’s going to take four to six months,” Watt said a few weeks ago (via AZCardinals.com). “I’m sitting there and I can easily pout and easily say, ‘Woe is me, four to six months, I’ll do what I have to do.’ But instead I said, ‘Nah, I’m not going to accept that.’”
Watt’s defied doctors in the past, having returned from a pectoral tear to play in the Texans’ two playoff games in 2019. And, when healthy, he’s still playing at a high level. In a limited sample of 341 defensive snaps this year, Pro Football Focus had him ranked as a top-10 interior defensive lineman.

Cardinals Add Bashaud Breeland To Practice Squad
It took a little longer than expected, but the Cardinals have signed Bashaud Breeland. On Tuesday, the cornerback agreed to join Arizona’s practice squad, per a club announcement.
Breeland verbally agreed to join the Cardinals’ 53-man roster last week, but a positive COVID-19 test put those plans on hold. Now, after the Cards’ 25-22 victory over the Cowboys, he may be called up for the season finale against the Seahawks. The Cardinals have already clinched their playoff spot, but they can take the NFC West with a win, plus a Rams loss.
The Cardinals have been on the lookout for cornerback depth ever since Robert Alford‘s season-ending injury. On top of that, Marco Wilson‘s status is still in flux thanks to his ailing shoulder.
Breeland, 29, offers plenty of big-game experience to offset his iffy 2021 with Minnesota. The veteran notched 63 tackles and two interceptions across 13 games for the Vikings this season, up until their messy divorce in December. For what it’s worth, PFF has ranked as one of the NFL’s worst qualified corners this year.
