Colts Waive S Roderic Teamer

The Colts have waived safety Roderic Teamer, per a club announcement. Teamer joined Indy on a reserve/futures deal back in January, but he was no longer needed after the team used a fifth-round pick to select Florida product Shawn Davis.

Teamer made six starts for the Chargers in 2019 and played on 39% of the Bolts’ defensive snaps. With action on 377 defensive plays, he was one of the season’s most active UDFAs. All in all, he notched one interception, one sack, and made 40 stops as a rookie. Pro Football Focus ranked him just 78th out of 85 full-time safeties, but Teamer still showed potential.

Then, in July, Teamer was hit with a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. The Chargers, who figured they were already set at safety, released Teamer later that summer and he spent 2020 out of the league.

Now, the Tulane product will look to sign with his third NFL team.

NFL Workout Updates: 10/6/20

Workout updates stand to be sparser going forward, with Mike Garafolo of NFL.com noting the NFL has moved to, in light of some teams’ recent issues with the coronavirus, cap workouts at five per week (Twitter link). However, the rule will not apply to teams that place more than three players on IR in a week, Garafolo tweets. In those scenarios, teams would be permitted to work out 10 players in a week. That said, here are the top developments from the workout circuit, as of Tuesday evening.

NFL Suspends Chargers S Roderic Teamer

The Chargers have assembled one of the NFL’s best secondaries, but one of its youngest members will not suit up until at least the team’s fifth game.

Second-year safety Roderic Teamer drew a four-game suspension Monday, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. A UDFA out of Tulane, Teamer received the suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Teamer made six starts last season and played on 39% of the Bolts’ defensive snaps, seeing action on 377 defensive plays as one of last year’s most active UDFAs. Teamer intercepted a pass, recorded a sack and registered 40 tackles as a rookie. Pro Football Focus, however, ranked him 78th out of 85 full-time safeties.

For a Los Angeles secondary that now houses four All-Pros, Teamer projects as a depth piece — now that Derwin James and Nasir Adderley are healthy. The Bolts also return fourth-year safety Rayshawn Jenkins and used a sixth-round pick on safety Alohi Gilman.

Joe Schobert is having one of his best NFL seasons, but the Browns haven’t reached out about signing the impending free agent. The linebacker told reporters that he hasn’t received any offers from the organization (via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com on Twitter).

The former fourth-rounder earned a Pro Bowl nod back in 2017, and he’s followed that up with two additional 100-plus-tackle seasons. That includes the current 2019 campaign, as Schobert has compiled 110 tackles, two sacks, nine passes defended, four interceptions, and a pair of forced fumbles.

If the linebacker were to hit free agency, there would surely be teams lining up for his services. For what it’s worth, Schobert told reporters that in a “perfect world,” he’d be in a Cleveland uniform come 2020.

  • Kyle Allen has filled in admirably for Cam Newton, but it doesn’t sound like he has a solid hold on the Panthers starting gig for the rest of the season. Interim head coach Perry Fewell told reporters that the quarterback situation is a “day to day, week to week situation” (via The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue on Twitter). Even if Allen doesn’t struggle, it makes sense for Carolina to see what they’ve got in rookie third-rounder Will Grier. The West Virginia product hasn’t seen the field this season, while Allen has tossed 16 touchdowns vs. 12 interceptions in his 11 games (11 starts).
  • Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said it was a “coach’s decision” to send home linebacker Denzel Perryman and safety Roderic Teamer on Saturday, according to Jeff Miller of the LA Times (on Twitter). ESPN’s Eric Williams tweets that the pair missed a morning meeting in Jacksonville, all leading to Lynn’s decision. Perryman has started 11 games this season, while Teamer has appeared in seven games.
  • Cowboys safety Jeff Heath said he may need shoulder surgery to repair labrum damage (via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas News on Twitter). The 28-year-old continues to play through the injury, and Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News tweets that there’s hope Heath can avoid the procedure until the offseason. The safety has started 10 games this season, compiling 45 tackles and five passes defended.

Chargers Sign 19 UDFAs

As teams officially announce their undrafted free agent classes, we’ll be posting them. The Chargers are the second team to announce, following the Steelers. Los Angeles inked a massive group, bringing in 19 players:

As the Chargers pointed out in their release, they’re annually one of the best teams at unearthing solid undrafted free agents. They’ve had an undrafted rookie make the team for 22 consecutive seasons, which is the longest streak in the NFL. In each of the last four seasons, they’ve had at least three undrafted rookies make the team.

One of their best undrafted finds in recent years, Tyrell Williams, just inked a huge four-year, $44MM deal with the Raiders. With their huge class this year, they opted for a lot of small school and FCS prospects. Tyler Newsome is an interesting signing since the Chargers had a terrible punting situation all of last year. They ended up releasing Drew Kaser in the middle of the year, and Newsome should have a good chance to make the team. Volson was the center for Easton Stick, who the Chargers just drafted in the fifth round, during their time at North Dakota State.
