Lions Release G Kenny Wiggins

Amid several adjustments to the Lions roster and practice squad Saturday, Kenny Wiggins learned of his release. The Lions cut the veteran guard ahead of their Week 7 game.

The team dropped Wiggins and cornerback Chris Jones from its active roster and activated running back Bo Scarbrough and defensive back Mike Ford from IR. The Lions also promoted tight end Isaac Nauta from its practice squad.

A third-year Lion, Wiggins serves as the most notable move here. He started 10 games for the 2018 squad and worked in a three-guard rotation with Joe Dahl and Graham Glasgow last season, playing 41% of Detroit’s offensive snaps. This season, however, Wiggins has not factored into the team’s work up front. He has played one offensive snap in four games, playing only on special teams.

Wiggins began the season on Detroit’s practice squad but was promoted to the active roster ahead of Week 2. Despite Dahl being placed on IR at that point, Wiggins did not see O-line action. The Lions identified a starter in third-round rookie Jonah Jackson as well, and Wiggins — a four-year Chargers contributor and 16-game starter in 2017 — is now a free agent.

Scarbrough played a key role for the Lions down the stretch last season, filling in for an injured Kerryon Johnson. The power back rushed for 377 yards and a touchdown in six games. But the Lions drafted D’Andre Swift and signed Adrian Peterson this year, and Scarbrough landed on IR. He has not dressed for a Lions game this season.

Lions’ T.J. Lang Done For Year

Lions guard T.J. Lang has been placed on injured reserve due to a neck injury, according to a team announcement. The move will end Lang’s season and may mark the end of his time in Detroit.

Lang, 31, left the Packers in 2017 to sign with their divisional rival. At the time, the Packers were widely slammed for allowing Lang to get away, but they may have made the smart move in hindsight. Thanks to injuries, Lang missed three games last season and appeared in just six games this year.

This offseason, the Lions can release Lang to save $9MM against the cap. The move would leave them with just $2.6MM in dead money and it’s something of a no-brainer, despite the two-time Pro Bowler’s past accomplishments.

In a related move, the Lions promoted cornerback Mike Ford off the practice squad. Even after swapping Lang for Ford, the Lions have one more vacant spot to fill on their 53-man roster.

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC North

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC North teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Bears, Lions, Packers, and Vikings are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Here are Sunday’s NFC North transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day:

Lions Bring In 16 UDFAs

One of the last UDFA contingents to be unveiled, the Lions have announced their 16-man group. Here’s the full rundown:

This class interestingly houses two members of Southeast Missouri’s most recent defense. Ford led the Redhawks with 14 passes defensed last season and finished with 28 bench press reps at his pro day. Meredith was a first-team all-conference performer as a junior in 2016. Having started 41 career games at Appalachian State, Nunn finished last season with the fewest pressures allowed among full-time Division I-FBS players.

Detroit will bring in four cornerbacks after not using one of its six draft choices at this spot. The Lions did add former Seahawks corner DeShawn Shead in free agency and have 2017 second- and fifth-round picks Teez Tabor and Jamal Agnew on their roster.
