Jaguars Trim Roster To 53

In addition to the cuts of quarterbacks Mike Glennon and Joshua Dobbs, here are the players the Jaguars parted ways with in order to reduce their roster to the 53-player limit.

Armstead is one of six players currently on a COVID-19 list around the league. He was expected to lead a Jaguars running back committee, following Leonard Fournette‘s departure. Players can be removed from the COVID list at any point. Armstead’s status will leave Devine Ozigbo and rookie UDFA James Robinson as the Jags’ running backs. This will be a team to monitor for waiver-claim adds at running back.

Nickerson, Giles-Harris and Orzich spent time on the Jaguars’ 53-man roster last season. The players jettisoned Saturday will become practice squad candidates, at least the bulk of them, on Sunday. Teams can begin signing players to their taxi squads Sunday, and after years of P-squads residing at 10 players, they will be 16-man units in this unique season.

Jaguars Sign CB Parry Nickerson

Days after trading their top cornerback to the Rams, the Jaguars have made an addition to their defensive backfield, announcing today that they’ve signed free agent cornerback Parry Nickerson.

Jalen Ramsey hadn’t been in the Jaguars’ lineup since Week 3, meaning Jacksonville had been turning to second-year pro Tre Herndon to play outside cornerback opposite A.J. Bouye. Herndon hasn’t been very successful, grading out as a bottom-10 corner league-wide per Pro Football Focus.

Nickerson was well-regarded before becoming a fifth-round pick of the Jets in 2018, so there’s a chance he could see significant action by season’s end. However, the results of his rookie campaign weren’t anything special, as Nickerson ranked as the fourth-worst cornerback among players with at least 200 defensive snaps, per PFF.

A Tulane product, Nickerson played in all 16 games (two starts) for the Jets last season before being dealt to Seattle this offseason. He spent time with the Seahawks’ practice squad before being cut loose earlier this week.

Before signing Nickerson, the Jaguars also auditioned fellow corners Jordan Brown, Kenneth Durden, Arrion Springs, according to veteran NFL reporter Howard Balzer (Twitter link).

Jets Deal CB Parry Nickerson To Seahawks

The Seahawks will make another Saturday trade. They will acquire cornerback Parry Nickerson from the Jets, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

New York will receive a 2021 conditional seventh-rounder for Nickerson, a 2018 sixth-round pick. Nickerson played in 16 Jets games last season, making two starts.

This marks another quick jettisoning of a Mike Maccagnan draft pick. The Jets cut third-round pick Jachai Polite earlier today, with Joe Douglas making moves to rid the roster of some young players his predecessor acquired.

Douglas said recently he will seek cornerback help off the waiver wire. With a corner being moved off the roster, that is now a near-certainty to occur.

Draft Pick Signings: 5/6/18

Here are Sunday’s draft pick signings:

  • Sixth-round Jets picks Parry Nickerson, a cornerback, and Folorunso Fatukasi, a defensive lineman, signed their four-year rookie contracts on Sunday. This makes rounds out the Jets’ sixth-round contingent to sign, with this duo following running back Trenton Cannon in doing so. New York made six picks in this year’s draft, and its top three selections have yet to sign.
